Contradiction between downsizing and qualified employee shortage
Organizations downsize in order to reduce cost by eliminating their employees. This is when we all receive rumors and gossips about people getting sacked or workers accepting VSS (Voluntary Separation Scheme) etc. On the other hand, vacancies are left unfilled in many organizations and these organizations claim that they cannot find adequate qualified people for those jobs. This paradox is becoming popular among large multinational corporations and there are several factors contributing to this business phenomenon. The current education system grade individuals only by their academic ability without putting any emphasis on instilling interpersonal skills in the students, causing fresh graduates of current times do not possess the required interpersonal skills in order to excel in the job market. This gives a big headache to the employers because employees that are weak in communication are least wanted in an organization as miscommunication will bring hazards to the company. Conventionally, the majority of people who choose IT careers because they feel more comfortable sitting in their cubicle dealing with computer than they are sitting in a room having a meeting with other colleagues, however employers realize that no matter what kind of technical skills an individual posses, without good communication skills, they will not be effective workers. Creative thinking is generally considered to be involved with the creation or generation of ideas, processes, experiences or objects. Creative thinking is another quality that is much sought after by organizations. The power of creativity and innovation is limitless. In the competitive world of business, if you can find ways to provide something better, faster and cheaper than your competitors eventually you will become the leader. For example, before Amazon.com, books are sold in shops and there’s always a limit of shelf space for the books and therefore having a limited range of customers however Amazon decided to stock the books in a warehouse and sell in through the internet. This one uncomplicated idea gave Amazon a big success. Sadly, majority of the modern day adult are only comfortable in staying stagnant and not being able to come up with fresh ideas. That creates a big difficulty for organizations to get the right human power they want. “Leaders are people who leave their footprints in their areas of passion.”(J.Byrnes,2005) Leaders are the ones that bring an organization to great success and leaders are also the ones that cause an organization to fall. Their role in an organization is indisputably important and great leaders are what organizations seek for. A good leader consists of many qualities like charisma, empathy, social boldness, dominance and the list goes on. There is an argument whether leaders are born or made but from my own perspective leaders can be born and can also be made but the fact is good leaders are what the society is lacking nowadays, hence organizations are willing to pay high in order to obtain such individuals in their workforce. At last, to survive in the business world, having an academic degree isn’t adequate as it is just a ticket for you to enter the job market, there are many other qualities that requires more emphasis, being book smart doesn’t mean you’re the best, it is often that streetwise individuals are the ones that succeed.
